All sports can be associated with parks and fields of play. But there is one field that occupied two teams that I love. The Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs. Before the Bears became known as the Monsters of the Midway, they were known as the Decatur Staleys. It was hard to take serously a team named after a business man, so after hiring George Halas, the team was moved to Chicago and became the Chicago Staleys. With no time to spare, George convinced the owner of Cubs Park to allow the team to play football on their field.
These men had no idea that they would be a part of architectual history. Let's face it, most athletes dream of being a part of sports history. That is their goal, that is their passion. But to have had the priveledge to play on a field that holds the most incredible feats of athletic triumphs is unbelievable! It was at Cubs Park, in 1921 that the Chicago Staleys beat the Green Bay Packers 20-0, which began the intence rivalry between these two teams to this day. The Chicago Bears continued to play at Wrigley Field for 49 years. It wasn't until 1971 that the Chicago Bears moved into Soldiers Field. It is the history of Cubs Park that forever holds the memories and records of players such as Clyde "Bulldog" Turner, Gale Sayers, Brian Piccalo and Dick Butkus.
Wrigley Field is truly the original "Field of Dreams!"
