I was sitting on the couch last night watching some the recap of the media day's highlights and interviews when it finally sank in... the freakin' Cardinals are in the Super Bowl. For me this is just something that I've thought was impossible for at least the last 20 years. I am not a Cardinal fan at all. I just have a mutual respect for them out of the love for the game that I have. I also had the pleasure of serving in Iraq with late Pat Tillman. I follow the Cardinals kind of like my In-Laws. When something important happens I take notice, but most of the time I could care less. What a fool I was!
first of all it has opened my eyes to the legendary credo "That's why they play the games!" On paper anything can look perfect, but it is on the field where that perception of perfection can become reality. With that being said, kudos! to the Arizona Cardinals as an organization, team, and fan base on your first Super Bowl appearance! May it be everything you always dreamed it would be.
I would like to tip my hat to Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt. Not for the job he has done this year, but for the willingness to step into a position with a team that has a long reputation for mediocrity, and leading them to greatness. I believe that he was the right man for the job. I remember something that Team USA Hockey Coach Herb Brooks said when he was told by the Olympic Commitee they had paid a large some of money to have the best prospects there to be chosen. Brooks replied firmly "I'm not looking for the best players, I'm looking for the right ones." I think the Cardinals are another example of that creed.
The Cardinals don't have the players that most people would consider superstars. Football is a team sport. The team that wins is more often than not the team that plays the best as a TEAM. Arizona has proven time and again that they can ride the arm of Kurt Warner, or the legs of Edgerrin James or Tim Hightower. Time and again we have seen Larry Fitzgerald or Anquan Boldin leap to new heights to make an amazing catch, or rookie Steve Breaston pull one in across the middle. Let us not forget the strength and desire of the defensive line anchored by Darnell Dockett. The Cardinals have just as much talent as any other team in the league, and on Sunday they will get the Chance to prove it. So Best of luck to the Arizona Cardinals; may this be a prequel of the great things yet to come.
