Geez, Gavin Floyd went into the 9th inning needing just two outs to record a no-hitter but Joe Maurer hit a shot to the outfield that went for a double and suddenly, it was over. For this game. But, this is the second time, that Floyd has come close to pitching a "game to remember." Against Detroit, about 3 weeks ago, he went 7+ innings before losing the bid in the 8th. Well, he's getting closer.
It must have been a thrill to be there at U.S. Cellular Field, the home crowd sensing history in the making.
Alas, The White Sox broke a long losing streak that had triggered Ozzie Guillen to go into a tirade against media, fans, and Mrs. O'Leary's cow. When will the Sox get a break? A no-hitter would have stolen the media thunder away from Cubdom. Let's face it, The crowds pack into Wrigley every game. It's the place to go, and the place to be seen, and oh, a game goes on. Sometimes the Cubs win.
It would be great if both the Sox and Cubs could win. Let Chicago have the baseball headlines---heck, I was listening to sports radio today and no one mentioned Floyd's no-hit bid, but this isn't Chicago. It's New York, and it somebody blows their nose, it's news in this city. If Floyd was a New York pitcher, this would be a big deal. Wow, a NY pitcher who can pitch...maybe he can help his team win a pennant? I can her it now. "Floyd has to go up to number two in the rotation." "Who is this guy? "Is he is good as Clemens was?" "What kind of stuff does he have?"
Is he married? IN NY if you're good they don't leave you alone, and if your bad, they really don't leave you alone.
If I was a good pitcher, I'd pitch in another city...work on my stuff and try to carve out a career. I don't need to be talked about on The View.
So Gavin...keep pitching. Maybe, one starry night, when you're stuff is clicking, you can move into another realm.
And, by the way, he's number five in the Sox rotation.
