The New York Giants scored 12 points to overtake the powerfulhouse Pittsburgh Steelers to win 21-14 on the road, while the New York Jets needed a last minute touchdown to squeeze by the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 in the Meadowlands.
Two dramatically different performances by New York's pro teams today. The Giants, trailing 14-9 in a bruising battle, tied the game on a botched snap to the punter in the end zone which was called a safety. That play also enabled the Giants to receive the kick from Pittsburgh and Eli Manning and the offense took over and scored a touchdown to take the lead.
The Jets played an inferior opponent who almost came away with an upset that would have stunned the team. Instead, Brett Favre connected on a late TD to bail out himself and his teammates. Favre threw for 3 interceptions, one which went 91 yards for a TD and a 4th quarter Chiefs' lead. Then the Jets woke up and drove down the field and punched one in the end zone to win the game late. Is this what it takes for the Jets? If this is the case, The Jets are going nowhere, even with the heralded Favre. He has thrown for 7 interceptions in 3 games. That is not helping your team win.
He is a gunslinger. And, he may be beyond his prime. In getting Favre, a month before the season started, the Jets hope that they were catching lightening in a bottle. In his flashes of brilliance, he can still win you a game. He can also toss one up their for grabs and the other team could come down with the ball. The Jets are lucky to be 4-3. They have some tough games ahead. If they don't play better they will be waving at the playoffs.
The Giants have a great defense that never quits--and the offense makes big plays. The Giants are 6-1 and play like they are the defending Super Bowl Champs. The Jets were close to having the season cave in on them, but they escaped.
If the Jets can't put away a team like Kansas City, then how are they going to beat a good team like the Pats or Titans on the road? Not likely, if they played like they did today.
