The Chicago Bears defeated the Green Bay Packers 20-17 at Soldier Field and yes, the Bears are 3-0 this season.
The Bears won because unlike Green Bay, they didn't make 17 penalties, and Devin Hester's brilliant punt return in the 4th quarter was as good as a Jay Cutler bomb. Hester flat out outran the Green Bay defenders on his way to a 62 yard score which electrified the Bears' faithful. We've been waiting for Hester to pull one off and he did it.
He is the best special teams player in the NFL today and he should be back returning punts every game. He showed his open field running that reminds one of Gayle Sayers, but he seems faster. Perhaps because this is 2010 and not 1965, but Hester was the key factor in this game. The Bears got early Christmas gifts in the form of penalties that caused offensive interference in the red zone, and called back a Packers' TD. Talk about taking points off the board.
Aaron Rodgers is the real deal. He was the Green Bay offense with his great passing, and deft running. He is a guy who has grown into his position and is the field general for the Pack. The offense runs through him. Today he didn't beat the Bears. But he could have. The Packers made too many mistakes and the Bears took advantage. Imagine that, a Bears team, taking advantage of bad plays. Well, maybe they're not as bad as we thought before the season started.
The Bears on D look a bit suspect. They bend but don't break. They gave up a lot of yardage, but only allowed 17 points to a high scoring team. Tonight they were lucky and pretty good. Sometimes you need both to win a game. Brian Urlacher stripped the ball from a Packer with just over 2:00 in the game. The Bears got breaks from Packer penalties, which gave them great field position. They ate up the clock and kicked a late field goal to win it.
