Brian Griese

26 January 2009

They've been through several in the past years including Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski, Brian Griese, andf Garcia. Jake Plummer raised expectations for about a minute after being traded to Tampa, but never took a snap as a Buccaneer and retired before the start of the season. Brad Johnson and Shaun King are faces of the past, and the future doesn't look very bright either. There should be plenty of free agent qb's this year and many may fit well in Tampa.

Now the question is-Do we have John Elway or Brian Griese?

      Here are the stats:

Second, Brian Griese has not played well at all the past two weeks, despite Tampa Bay emerging with victories.  Does Jon Gruden honestly believe that Jeff Garcia would not have thrown less than Griese’s whopping six interceptions? Garcia would not have needed to throw for 400 yards against the Chicago Bears because he would not have committed the same three turnovers. I don’t understand Gruden’s mentality when it comes to who starts for him under center. As long as he’s winning, I guess it doesn’t concern him.

That’s really the only way to describe yesterday’s return of Brian Griese. From the opening play when Tommie Harris got involved with Bucs offensive lineman Donald Penn, it was obvious Tampa Bay was playing dirtier than usual. After early penalties on both teams, the referees seemed to contain most of the emotion. Though it proved to not be enough as another fight broke out in overtime with the game on the line. After the defense halted Tampa on third down, one of the Bucs offensive lineman refused to get off of a Bears defender, even going so far as to forearm the Bear in the facemask. Obviously, this starts an old-fashioned scrum. Entering late, Bears cornerback Charles Tillman got involved with a Buccaneer trying to helmet him in the back. Tillman throws that player to the ground and gets flagged for unnecessary roughness, giving the Bucs new life in the form of a first down.

If you had told me six months ago that the Bears and Bucs would play in week 3 and Brian Griese was going to be involved in a quarterback controversy, I would’ve had no problem believing you. In fact, I would’ve had money on it. The weird part is

over Philadelphia as another example of bad, or perhaps good as it turned out-communication.  Brian Griese leads the team 93 yards in the final minutes to win the game.  He does so without the use of the communication device in his helmet which went kaput.  He called his own plays and got them into the end zone.  In the post game press conference, Griese tells everyone that's what happened and then makes a crack about that having been a good thing depending on how you look at it.  The following day the team wasn't basking in the glow of a victory. Rather, it was trying to get Griese to retract his statement and apologize for his seemingly derrogatory comment about the coaching staff.

Brian Griese was traded back to his old team today for an undisclosed 2009 draft pick. We all knew this was coming, especially since he was due a $300,000 roster bonus tomorrow and wouldn’t have stayed on the roster even if he hadn’t been traded. This is comforting news for Angelo, who got something, anything, for Greesee rather than just giving him the ol’ das boot. I don’t really understand what the Bucs were thinking. Take a gander at their current QB roster for ‘08:
