Detroit somehow jumped out to a 14-7 lead early thanks to a few turnovers from New Orleans, which made me sweat my prediction for a stretch. Though it eventually went the way I was expecting due to some piss-poor secondary play from the Lions. I saw the worst busted coverage I’ve ever seen on the Devery Henderson touchdown. Detroit had way too many opportunities to get turnovers in the second half but completely failed to get any pressure on Drew Brees with their front four. As much as the praise should go to Brees and his receivers for blowing up a crappy defense, I’m going to give major credit to that offensive line for dominating this game from start to finish. They were fantastic, blocking for 167 yards on the ground and giving tremendous protection for Brees on every drop-back. Can’t wait to see them take on the Niners, who have the opposite problem as Detroit.

Who ISN’T ready for this game? Everyone’s predicting shoot-out, and I can’t argue that prognostication. Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford both threw for over 5,000 yards this season, setting the stage for fireworks Saturday night. Stafford has Calvin Johnson on his side (which is awesome), but not much else. They won’t convert third downs at a high percentage and they won’t be able to run the ball and keep Brees off the field. Their defensive front four is good, but not good enough to make up for the lapses in the secondary, which allowed back-up Matt Flynn to pass for 480 yards and six touchdowns. Now they get Drew Brees. (Not a back-up.) Can you say trouble?

Six touchdowns? 480 yards? Who wouldn’t want to be Matt Flynn right now? That guy is about to make BANK as a free agent. Blow me Green Bay. Take your awesome quarterback development and blow me.

So without Ndamukong Suh (who wasn’t playing all that well this year anyway, but still needs to be blocked), how are the Lions going to get a legitimate pass rush on Drew Brees? I could easily see Drew and the gang going off in this one. Darren Sproles should abuse a soft run defense and Brees’ receivers are going to viciously exploit that Lion secondary. This is the week that will show the league who the Lions really are.

Green Bay has no need to run the ball and Detroit doesn’t have the ability to run, so expect 40 passes on the day for each quarterback. It’ll be a shoot-out to start the day.

Well that was easy. The Chicago Bears wasted no time it laying the wood to the Detroit Lions, paying them back for the Monday night loss earlier in the season and notching their fourth win in a row. The Lions were sloppy with the ball on offense and committed costly penalties of which the Bears were more than happy to take advantage. It was a defensive demolishing from Lovie Smith’s crew, who went to man coverage and shut the Lions down.

Each year it seems to be Detroit’s year to take the next step and make a playoff run. They’re essentially the Houston Texans of the NFC. They were going to have a fantastic one-two punch in the backfield when they drafted Mikel Leshoure, but naturally he tore an ACL and is out for the year. Now Jahvid Best has to take the bulk of the carries again. On the defensive line, the Lions will be frighteningly talented once Nick Fairley can get on the field. Along with Kyle Vanden Bosch, Chris Avril and Ndamukong Suh, it’s going to a rude awakening for any opposing QB, which is good news for the Lions’ still-improving secondary. However, the key to Detroit’s survival in the NFC North is Matthew Stafford. Everyone believes he’s ready to be an elite quarterback in the NFL, but he hasn’t been able to stay on the field long enough to prove them right. If he can, Detroit can take the next step. I’m betting he can’t.

With only five picks in this year’s draft, the Lions had a lot of holes to fill. Drafting Nick Fairley with pick 13 made the Lion defensive line even more frightening than it already was. Partnering Fairley with Ndamukong Suh and Kyle Vanden Bosch will ensure his work ethic won’t slacken as the season draws on, which was the only drawback teams had with Fairley. Detroit took the strength of their team and made it significantly more dynamic and fearsome.

This loss puts them behind the eight-ball in the playoff picture, much less the division race. Detroit gutted out a close win, which is something they never do. Well played boys.

(2-9) Detroit Lions

While the Lion defense may be improved from its typical ranking (now 20th in the NFL in total yards), they still give over 25 points a game, which means Mike Martz should have no problem whipping up a gameplan for success. Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch will be inactive, sitting out with a neck injury. That means the Bears need to place their blocking focus squarely on tackle Ndamukong Suh, who would love nothing more than to put my quarterback on the turf.

Always a good one to start the day, the Detroit Lions shouldn’t have any trouble getting pounded by the Pats. Without Matthew Stafford under center the Lions are going to struggle to put up points, despite the inexperience of the Patriot secondary. Does anyone really think this game is going to be less than a ten-point win for Tom Brady? Sure, it LOOKS like one of those games the Patriots might not take seriously, but they’ve already had that game recently when they lost to Cleveland. They’re not doing it again so soon. This should be over by halftime.

The Bills won't go win-less! YAY! Though if they win too many games they might not be able to draft a quarterback first overall and pay him over fifty million bucks. Think about it. On the other side, this was a horrid loss for the Lions, who could only put 12 points on one of the worst defenses in the league. Saddening.

As sad as this loss was, what hurts the Lions even more is the loss of Matthew Stafford... for the second time this season. As tough as Stafford seems, he just gets hurt far too often. He's in no way a bust, but he's one more shoulder problem away from being injury prone. For the Jets, Mark Sanchez is steadily improving each week, even without help from the running game. They've been lucky to get wins the past two games, but they need to improve their pass defense if they're going to keep up in the AFC.

A crappy offense against a crappy defense. A good offense versus a good defense. Those are the notes to take into today's game between two teams at the opposite ends of the spectrum. The battle between first-round QB's Mark Sanchez and Matthew Stafford will be worth a watch though. I like Stafford to win that contest, but the Jets to take the game. That defense is too good and the Lions aren't at their level yet.

So... lost amidst a rare and exciting Detroit win behind Matthew Stafford is the complete shock that was Mike Shanahan's benching of Donovan McNabb for... Rex Grossman? Really? With my supposed wealth of football knowledge, I can't understand this move at all. Claims of McNabb's "cardiovascular endurance" or insufficient knowledge of the two-minute drill sound weak at best. Having seen Grossman for years as a Bears fan (and still owning his jersey), he is not the answer in a two-minute drill. Ever.

Oh man, I want to watch the Lions lose to the Rams so badly. In a rare occasion, the Lions are actually favored in this game, but without Matthew Stafford I think we're in for an upset. The Rams need this game to prove their legitimacy in the sub-par NFC West. Sam Bradford will face one of the weakest secondaries in the league and should go off big time.

I didn't put this game in because I think it's going to be dramatic. I listed it so if you wanted to relax and watch a no-mercy pounding, you'd know to tune in to this one. The Packers are going to be angry after their Monday night loss in Chicago and will look to take it out on the Lions. They won't commit another 18 penalties this week, that's for sure. Fantasy owners, Aaron Rodgers is your best friend this week against a severely lacking Lions secondary.

While Detroit is right in-line with an 0-2 record, no one expected the Minnesota Vikings to start so slow after the season they hard last year. Brett Favre may want to get in-sync with his receivers against the Lion secondary or he might consider heading back down to Mississippi. If Matthew Stafford was starting, I'd strongly consider picking the Lions. With Shaun Hill, they don't have a shot.

Well it was certainly a close call the Lions' late rally, but the Eagles won their first game of the season thanks to the talents of Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy's three touchdowns. Vick's 284 yards and two touchdowns through the air gave QB-less teams around the league (Buffalo anyone?) a heads-up for when free agency comes around. The other heads-up was given by Detroit running back Jahvid Best, who is all man. (And fast, too.)

s may say a win is a win, but I'm awfully concerned with the results of Sunday's 19-15 win over the Detroit Lions. For a team that completed dominated their opponents statistically, the Bears just barely found a way to win in the final two minutes. Oh yeah, and they almost gave that slim lead up to an offense that hadn't scored or even netted a first down since the second quarter.

(1-8) Cleveland Browns at (1-8) Detroit Lions 

This is the 2009 Suck Bowl Rebuilding Bowl. AKA the only game where the Lions should be healthy favorites all season. Say what you want about Detroit, they can put up some points with Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. I'm not sure Cleveland is even aware that scoring six points at once is possible. The best part about the game is that one of these teams will reach two victories. (Though how classic and awesome would a tie be?

It was unimpressive statistically, but Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears dominated the Detroit Lions in the second half en route to a 48-24 win on Sunday. 

Even though Detroit’s offense ran 76 plays compared to Chicago’s 50 and racked up nearly 400 yards, it wasn’t enough to overcome losing the field position battle. All of the Lions’ 13 drives started from within their own 30-yard line. Out of the Bears 13 drives, only three started behind the 30. With that kind of field position, Jay Cutler didn’t have to throw for 300 yards to get the victory.

One thing is for sure going into this Sunday’s match-up at Solider Field: these aren’t the 2008 Lions. Know how I know that? The 2009 Lions have won a game. It happened just last weekend against the Redskins. Detroit head coach Jim Schwartz is hoping to turn it into a streak, with the Chicago Bears playing their second victim.

I’m rooting for the Lions to avoid the longest regular season losing streak in league history (20 games). Why? So I can see the chaos that will undoubtedly ensue in Washington when the ‘Skins fall. Jim Zorn is already under pressure for his inept offense that barely put away the Rams last week.

New Orleans Saints 45, Detroit Lions 27

Even if it was against the Lions, Drew Brees’ six touchdowns are nothing short of amazing. They were from all over the field, hitting multiple receivers. They let a rookie QB lead his team to 27 points, but it was a great first game for the Saints.

Well, the Brett Favre saga appears to be over… for now. 

The routinely flip-flopping quarterback informed ESPN’s Ed Werder of his decision to stay retired  after telling Brad Childress of the Minnesota Vikings.  Favre explained that he was unsure of his body’s ability to withstand another grueling NFL season and the training camp and preseason schedule that accompany it.

As OTA's and minicamps progress while training camp begin to roll over the horizon, America's favorite sport nears its regular season.  While nobody knows how well teams will do in a season with the randomness of injuries and several other factors, it's always interesting to look ahead at the schedule and prognosticate.  Unlike most people, I'm not going to give just a win or loss for each game, rather I'm going to predict how many times the Steelers would win if they played a team 10 times.  For instance if the Steelers were playing a very crappy team, I would say 9/10 or 10/10.  At the end i will add up the wins and divide by 10, giving us how many wins they will have this season.

So there is barely any news on the Chicago front. After waiting over five hours to make their only pick of the day at number 17 in the second round (49th overall), the Chicago Bears made a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. The Bears sent their 2nd round selection to Seattle and received the Seahawks’ 3rd round (68th overall) and 4th round (105th) choices, both of which will be on Sunday.

Tennessee Titans 47, Detroit Lions 10

The Titans logged 21 points in the first quarter off of two Chris Johnson runs and an interception return for a touchdown. They added two Lendale White rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, ending this game at halftime. Detroit was never in this game, as is expected from a team who is 0-12. Daunte Culpepper was average at best, but was never helped out by a Detroit running game that only totaled 23 yards. Tennessee ran over the Lions, racking up 292 yards on the ground. This blowout served as evidence for those who think Detroit should not be allowed to host games on Thanksgiving. Also, CBS’ Phil Simms should not be allowed to commentate on nationally televised games, period.

In my area, for example, the Utah-BYU game was not even on television. A game between two top 20 teams was unavailable. A game that would determine one of the schools in the BCS this season was a no-show.

Bears fans almost witnessed a complete disaster on Sunday. As it turned out, it was only a mild one. As Kyle Orton left the field near the end of the first half against Detroit, the collective hopes for this team left with him. Everyone knew what was coming. Kyle’s injury meant the return of Rex Grossman, otherwise known as the most scrutinized quarterback in NFL history (he also goes by “Sexy Rexy” and ‘Wrecks” Grossman).

After week five’s utter domination of the Lions at Ford Field, Kyle Orton and the Bears are hoping for a repeat performance here in week nine. Since the Packers are going to be in a fight for their lives against the unbeaten Tennessee Titans, the Bears are staring at a perfect opportunity to regain sole possession of first place.

         While surfing the internet recently, I have come to a sad conclusion-the Apocalypse is UPON US! The number of morons in America is staggering. I wrote a column several weeks ago talkling about what would happen if a star quarterback like Tony Romo was injured during the season.   Although the comments I have recieved here have been insightful,I was lambasted by some on other message boards for claiming that he indeed was injured. I found it laughable that they could not understand that a question was being raised. (Article is found in September Archives) Romo wasn't hurt. We all knew that. Now he is -  as well as Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, and Brodie Croyle. My staments on its effects on a team have also come true. But I digress.

s the Minnesota Vikings left the field in the first half of Sunday's lackluster contest against the Detroit Lions, Vikings fans reigned down boos on their Purple.  Midway through the second half, chants of "Fire Childress!" could be heard booming through the Metrodome.  With the type of anemic offense the Vikings have had over the last three years, there is good reason that Childress should be doing no more than updating his resume by now.  On the other hand, the Vikes ARE 3-3 this season and tied with Green Bay and Chicago (next week's opponent) for first place in the hapless NFC North.

Lions fans were booing early and often in this game and I don't blame them. They looked completely lost. Miscues and dropped passes killed them against the Bears. I loved it. The Bears needed a game like this to gain confidence in the offense. Orton loves playing against the Lions, with good reason. He was 24-of-34 for 334 yards and had a 121.4 rating, going to 3-0 against Detroit. The Lions stacked the box making Orton beat them and he did exactly that connecting on TD passes of 9 yards to Forte and 12 yards to Hester, who had a nice spin move to get himself in the endzone.

quo;t have been predicted so far this season, at least one thing in the NFL remains a constant: the Detroit Lions are still awful. However, now that Matt Millen has been fired as team President that might not be the case much longer. Though for Bears fans there’s no need to worry, I’m confident that the Lions will continue to be an embarrassment for at least the rest of this season. Changing a GM or President won’t change the product on the field but it can affect the mentality of a team, but the Lions’ morale is so low it won’t make any difference for the foreseeable future. With that in mind, the Chicago Bears need to avoid being embarrassed by the dregs of the NFC North.
