Hey Jacksonville fans, Blaine Gabbert didn’t look like a frightened turd last week! Huzzah! Seriously though, it’s an improvement you should be pleased with. But what really caused the drastic improvement was the commitment to running Maurice Jones-Drew all over a crappy Buc defense. Atlanta won’t be as porous, but the script should remain the same. Maybe they finally turned the corner? (Probably not.)

I don’t care so much about this result, since the Jags are pretty terrible. But Matt Leinart broke his collarbone, effectively ending his season and leaving T.J. Yates in charge of this playoff-bound squad. That has to be a frightening thought for Texan fans. I was really looking forward to Leinart and his porn’ ‘stache.

I’m only putting this game on the list because it’s being talked up as one of the only winnable games the Colts have on their schedule. Get used to it Colt fans.

Jacksonville Jaguars

So two days ago I would have been writing this talking about how unexciting David Garrard was. Thankfully the Jaguars cut him less than a week before their opener and now I get to talk up… Luke McCown? Oh what the F***? Honestly, Luke’s a classic NFL journeyman back-up QB. He’s not particularly strong at anything, but he won’t utterly embarrass you… if he has any playmakers around him. The problem in Jacksonville is that they have so few of them. Their wide receivers are young and inconsistent, headed by Mike Thomas. (Wait, who?) Marcedes Lewis is an excellent tight end, but he can’t draw enough defenders to keep teams from stacking the box against Maurice Jones-Drew all game long. Defensively the Jags are going to struggle to rush the passer, again. They lack depth at linebacker, but made a decent if overpriced pick-up in Paul Posluszny. Rashean Mathis is supposed to be a good corner, but I haven’t seen that level of play from him in a year or two. Good luck keeping the Jaguars in Jacksonville with the season you’re about to witness. But don’t worry Jag fans, Blaine Gabbert will be starting soon enough.

Peyton Manning needed a win… and he got it. But he didn’t have to do it alone. Running back Donald Brown returned to the line-up to rack up 129 yards on the ground to take away the pressure from Manning’s 39 pass attempts. Now the Colts can win out and get into the playoffs, which would battle-test them before the playoffs and make them a team no one would want to play. Oh, and Austin Collie should sit the rest of the year. Three concussions through 15 weeks? No more.

The Jaguars are legitimately the most two-faced team in the league. This week it permeated the game as they held the Giants to nine points in three quarters, only to give up 15 in the final period. Way to drop the ball. For the Giants, Eli Manning came on late, playing as well as he had all season. If Eli doesn’t commit turnovers, the Giants can beat anyone.

As tight as the AFC South race is, the loser of this contest is going to have an uphill battle getting into the playoffs. They'll have to jump over at least two teams to do it. Houston's pass defense is even crappier than we thought going into the season, so David Garrard could light them up through the air... or he could complete 50% of his passes and toss a pick. Who knows? This game should at least have consistent scoring, as neither defense is all that impressive.

Alright, color me pasty white and shocked. This Colt defense got shredded by David Garrard's legs and gave up 174 yards on the ground to Jacksonville. Anyone questioning Andy Reid's decision to go with Michael Vick now? He sure looks good as an Eagle. His completion percentage was more in line with what we've seen from Vick in the past, but 291 yards and three scores through the air sure isn't. His deep ball is as clean as ever, giving the Eagles the big play ability they enjoyed with McNabb. As long as he plays like this, there's no reason to pull Vick out of the line-up. In Jacksonville, things are ugly. I wouldn't be sure David Garrard would last the entire season as the starter if they didn't have Luke McCown and Todd Bouman as his back-ups. He's the starter by default.

Peyton's Colts have actually lost a regular season game they wanted to win, so that's always odd. What isn't odd is Bob Sanders' injury. Let's get it on!

Jacksonville Jaguars

Last year the Jags were plagued by injuries to their offensive line and inconsistency from the skill positions. Maurice Jones-Drew is still a talented running back in this league, but I'm not sold that his production will match the near-1400 yards and 15 touchdowns from last year. Torry Holt, Jacksonville's second-leading receiver last season, has departed for New England, leaving Mike Sims-Walker as the only wide-out of note on the roster. (Don't even mention Troy Williamson. He's a bust until otherwise noted.) Tight ends Marcedes Lewis and Zach Miller will be integral to David Garrard's success this season, particularly in the red zone. With only 15 TD's and 10 interceptions last season, Garrard needs to step up this year if he's to keep his job. Head Coach Jack Del Rio is on the hot seat too.

(7-7) Jacksonville Jaguars at (9-5) New England Patriots

Anyone want to place a bet as to what Jaguars team we'll going to see on Sunday? They're so wildly inconsistent (backed up by their 7-7 record) that I can't possibly see them stringing two wins in a row to end the season. The Patriots would secure a three or four seed with a win, ensuring them a home game to start the post-season. Bill Belichick's defense will have a stiff challenge trying to slow down the Jacksonville ground attack, but they'll get the win thanks to Brady and the offense.

Jacksonville Jaguars (6-4) at San Francisco 49ers (4-6)

This game has the recipe to be ugly. Jacksonville and Tennessee both love to mercilessly pound the ball at their opponent. The difference will be at the quarterback position. Between Alex Smith and David Garrard, the quarterback that makes the least mistakes will walk away with the win. To me, that means a Jaguars victory as Alex Smith hasn’t shown he’s dependable at all. Keep an eye on these Jags; they’re right in line for a wildcard slot.

As football fans across the globe cast their longing eyes in the direction of the April draft, I decided that now might be a good time to reflect on draft classes of the last 10 years. Too often in this business, we rush ahead to the next big event without taking pause to evaluate the past and learn from it. In a way, this study will still be a celebration of the coming 2009 draft as I believe it will shed some light on certain overlooked trends that no one ever stops to consider. I will begin with a class by class showdown of sorts at the quarterback position over the last 10 drafts.  This is part II in the series:

4) Jacksonville Jaguars @ Houston Texans

I bet ESPN is stoked to have this game on Monday Night Football this week. Two disappointing 4-7 teams go at it here. Listening to Houston sports talk radio this past week, the fans are still pumped for the first ever MNF game at Reliant Stadium, but it could have been so much more if the Texans could have performed better up to this point. Reliant should be filled or ESPN and management might think twice about bringing Monday Night Football back to Houston anytime soon. Onto the game, both teams have had some good games against each other. The Jaguars are the Texans only other 'real' rivalry in the AFC South. You could say the Titans since they use to be the Oilers...but the Texans have only defeated them 2-3 times. Forget about the Colts (Texans have only won once against them in their franchise). However the Texans have defeated the Jags 5-6 times in their existence. Both teams can forget about the playoffs this season. So really this game will be all about pride. I think the Texans hosting their first ever MNF game will still be pumped and I think they'll take it to the Jaguars early. I'll be a homer here and take the Texans. Do ESPN proud, Houston.

Jeff Fisher should find a game on the Titans’ schedule to lose, honestly. Not to a serious contender or a trash heap, but a mid-level team that could use the confidence but can’t do anything with it. We all saw what happened with the Patriots. Tennessee was down in this one early 14-3, but rallied with 21 unanswered to remain undefeated. Kerry Collins has been called on to win games, and he has delivered expertly. Vince Young wouldn’t have been able to do that. That's all I'm sayin'.

Now if the Titans win again, I'll have to strangle my gut and put it in a choke hold. layer of depth behind Clinton Portis, who should be saved for an eventual push for the playoffs.

Jacksonville Jaguars 24, Denver Broncos 17

Denver, behind the skill of Jay Cutler, took the opening possession 80 yards for a touchdown on the first drive of the game. After that opening score, the Broncos turned the ball over on three of their next four possessions, giving Jacksonville opportunities to jump on the board. Denver didn’t get another touchdown until the fourth quarter, when Jacksonville had already built a sizeable lead. It was a return to form for the Jags, as they finally discovered their running game with Maurice Jones-Drew. Fred Taylor was out most of the game after being injured in the first quarter, but returned late to spell MJD in key situations. Denver had their own injury issues, as wide-out Brandon Stokley left with a concussion, leaving Brandon Marshall as their sole first day starter. Receiver Eddie Royal and tight end Tony Scheffler were both out with injuries, which dampened a normally fiery offensive attack. While Marshall is one of the best young receivers in the NFL, he can’t be expected to be the only target for Cutler. Jacksonville was able to double up on him and force Denver to go in other directions. In the end, this was a bigger win for Jacksonville than it was a loss for Denver. However, now that San Diego is behind them at 3-3, Mike Shanahan might beg to differ.

I’m sure Bill Parcells will too.

Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) at Denver Broncos (4-1)

The way preseason predictions were going; these two teams should be in the opposite positions. For Jacksonville, their running game hasn’t come close to the pounding success it was last season. That means the pressure is on David Garrard and his under-achieving wide receiver corps to keep drives alive. As long as that’s the case, don’t expect the Jaguars to win many games this year; they simply don’t have the talent at wide-out to keep it going. The defense is slacking, giving up at least twenty points in each of their last four games. Jacksonville is built on running the ball and tough defense, so major problems will arise when neither aspect of their game is performing. As for the high-scoring Denver Broncos, they’re coming off an odd showing against Tampa Bay. Their offense, normally a lock for 24 points, only managed sixteen against a tough Tampa defensive unit. The Denver defense however, showed some gumption and shut down the Buc offense, allowing only thirteen. That’s a great sign for Coach Mike Shanahan, as it proves his offense won’t have to win every game by themselves. This will be a true test for both teams and will go a long way in settling their positions in the AFC playoff race.

ith great consistency, and that should keep Arizona in the NFC West lead.

Pittsburgh Steelers 26, Jacksonville Jaguars 21

Much like Tennessee v. Baltimore, this was a contest between two heavy-hitting teams that normally focus on running the ball effectively and not asking their quarterbacks to do too much. That philosophy changed for Pittsburgh out of necessity, as their top two running backs were out. Ben Roethlisberger showed yet again why he is one of the best quarterbacks in the league by making big plays in big situations, though he still took way too many hits. He kept the Steelers in this one, and led them to victory late against a stout Jacksonville defense. Ben needs to focus on getting the ball out quickly and picking his spots to make plays in the pocket. Every defense knows he stands in the pocket too long, so they’ll be sure to send blitzes his way to try and capitalize. Jacksonville started off strong, with corner Rashean Mathis picking off Ben’s first throw and running it back for six, but the Jaguar offense didn’t help him out at all. QB David Garrard had a decent game passing, but the running game never found its stride against a vicious Pittsburgh front seven. They only accumulated 38 yards on 19 carries, a paltry sum for a normally successful backfield. The Jags can’t afford to lose these games, as Indianapolis is due for a winning streak.

Willie Parker is still out and back-up Rashard Mendenhall is done for the season with a fractured shoulder received against the Ravens. Gary Russell and Najeh Davenport were re-signed by the Steel men to pick up the scraps in the running game with Mewelde Moore starting this Sunday against the Jags. These two teams know each other, that's no secret. I have a gut feeling however that the Steelers will come out on top in this one. I have four reasons. (Yes four!) 1) Just like the Ravens, I think the adrenaline will carry over from Monday Night. 2) Good teams find ways to win with injuries. Steelers are a Super Bowl caliber team by many, this will be a good test. 3) The Houston Texans horrible defense were able to stop Taylor/Jones pretty nicely last week. I think the Steelers review what the Texans did and try to copy it. 4) Three out of the last 4 Sunday Night Games the upset has won. That's right. Every Sunday Night game besides the Packers/Cowboys, the upset team has won. And I have a little superstition in me. I'm picking the Steelers in this one.

pa under 20 should be enough to get the Broncos to 4-1.

Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1) at Jacksonville Jaguars (2-2)

Another smash-mouth affair airs this Sunday night, as the Steelers look to avenge their playoff loss to the Jaguars. (Is it just me, or do the Steelers and Cowboys get a ton of primetime games?) The problem is Pittsburgh may be too banged up to do the job. After losing starting lineman Kendall Simmons and rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall for the season, the Steeler running game is running on empty. So much that they resigned Najeh Davenport, whom they cut shortly after drafting Mendenhall. Willie Parker isn’t expected to return until Oct. 19th, so Big Ben Roethlisberger will take to the air against the Jacksonville defense. The no-huddle provided a much-needed spark versus the Ravens last Monday night, so it should make a repeat appearance.

The Crying Game

The Terrell Owens story

Hello NFL fans,

Well here we are, week four of the third year with his last team. This will be his last team, I truly believe that. If I were an owner I would rather get a letter full of anthrax and then imprisoned IN Cuba to spend the rest of my days. The continuous onslaught of reporters and fans condemning my name and wanting my head on a stick would be too much for me to bare.

ther week, so look for tight end Jeremy Shockey to factor largely into the Saints passing attack.

Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) at Indianapolis Colts (1-1)

Jacksonville is a team many football “experts” picked to dethrone the Colts as AFC South champions. If that is still going to happen after a disappointing start, this is the game to do it. Losing to Indy puts Jacksonville at 0-3, essentially three games behind Manning’s crew counting the head-to-head loss. David Garrard has thrown three interceptions in two games this season, which is as many as he threw in twelve games in ’07. He needs to return to form if the Jags have any AFC South title aspirations.  The Colts have had trouble establishing their ground game, as Joseph Addai only has 64 yards in two games. Look for them to stretch the field early to set up their ground game late.

needs to attack an average San Diego secondary in this division match-up.

Buffalo Bills (1-0) at Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1)

The Bills shocked everyone by dismantling perennial NFC West champion Seattle Seahawks. If Dick Jauron’s crew wants to capitalize on New England’s misfortune, beating a hard-nosed Jaguars squad will put them in the perfect position. Jacksonville is having offensive line troubles, which will make their renowned running game more difficult to maintain.

I just wanted to let you know that I may be unable to post for a few days. I live south of Houston, near Galveston, Texas. As hurricane Ike approaches there may be power outages and loss of internet access. If that is the case, I will be unable to write my column. Remember though, there are things much more important than sports. If you need Ike information, you can go to:

The Tennessee Titans are in first, while the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Houston Texans are all in last place. Soon, however, astigmatism will set in. Winners will lose and losers will win.

*Editor's Note: This piece was written Tuesday night but, due to Internet problems, is being posted just now.

Only the NFL can make headlines with the release of its regular season schedule. Granted, there are only a handful of games for fans to absorb, so the attention given to each week is natural. However, this speaks increasingly to the booming popularity of the league.
