rsquo;s time for The Final Drive of the Divisional Round! (14-3) San Francisco 49ers 36
(14-4) New Orleans Saints 32

I’m not sure I can put into words how freaking EPIC this game was. It was such a fantastic start to the weekend’s action. The Saints came out embarrassingly flat, with three turnovers early, including a horrendous pick over the middle from Drew Brees, who never saw the safety coming. The Niners turned those possessions into points, notching 17 with not even a minute gone by into the second quarter. Brees fought back as you knew he would, finding his big targets Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston on consecutive drives to pull within three at the break. It was hard to say the Niners had the momentum though. I mean, when the other team turns it over four times in a half and you’re only up a field goal? That’s a problem. San Fran’s special teams even got another turnover from Darren Sproles early in the third, but they could only manage to put up a field goal. Eventually that was going to come back to bite them. San Francisco wasn’t even trying to run the ball for the first three quarters, an offensive plan that befuddled me, to say the least. Alex Smith was getting all sorts of pressure from the Saints, who were simply sending more rushers than the Niners had blockers. (Just math, really.)

That means it’s a great day for The Opening Drive!

(13-4) New Orleans Saints at
(13-3) San Francisco 49ers
4:30 PM ET, FOX

Off for a week, it’s easy to have forgotten about the Niners and their tremendous regular season which earned them that rest. Alex Smith had a solid year (finally), but he hasn’t been all that impressive to me when I’ve gotten the chance to see him. He has a few decent weapons, but the Saints’ focus should be on running back Frank Gore and tight end Vernon Davis, Smith’s main outlets. ‘Frisco’s offensive line is underrated and should have the clear advantage in the running game, but how are they going to put up points? Michael Crabtree is (sorta) good, but he’s not dangerous enough to put up a monster game and abuse the Saints secondary all day. If they’re going to win, Jim Harbaugh’s defense will have to contain this next man.

Jerks.

(14-3) New Orleans Saints 45
(10-7) Detroit Lions 28

Detroit somehow jumped out to a 14-7 lead early thanks to a few turnovers from New Orleans, which made me sweat my prediction for a stretch. Though it eventually went the way I was expecting due to some piss-poor secondary play from the Lions. I saw the worst busted coverage I’ve ever seen on the Devery Henderson touchdown. Detroit had way too many opportunities to get turnovers in the second half but completely failed to get any pressure on Drew Brees with their front four. As much as the praise should go to Brees and his receivers for blowing up a crappy defense, I’m going to give major credit to that offensive line for dominating this game from start to finish. They were fantastic, blocking for 167 yards on the ground and giving tremendous protection for Brees on every drop-back. Can’t wait to see them take on the Niners, who have the opposite problem as Detroit.

I think the Bengals will cover that four. (10-6) Detroit Lions at
(13-3) New Orleans Saints
8:00 PM ET, NBC

Who ISN’T ready for this game? Everyone’s predicting shoot-out, and I can’t argue that prognostication. Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford both threw for over 5,000 yards this season, setting the stage for fireworks Saturday night. Stafford has Calvin Johnson on his side (which is awesome), but not much else. They won’t convert third downs at a high percentage and they won’t be able to run the ball and keep Brees off the field. Their defensive front four is good, but not good enough to make up for the lapses in the secondary, which allowed back-up Matt Flynn to pass for 480 yards and six touchdowns. Now they get Drew Brees. (Not a back-up.) Can you say trouble?

And if you didn’t notice, Aldon Smith is scary good.(12-3) New Orleans Saints 45
(9-6) Atlanta Falcons 16

Kudos to Drew Brees and the entire Saints organization for breaking one of the most esteemed records in the NFL. It’s a testament to Brees’ dedication and hard work… and super mega-f*ck-accuracy. Aside from his two picks on Monday night (one of which was a crazy tip in the air), Brees set the all-time yardage record in near-perfect fashion. Atlanta, have fun dealing with that in the playoffs.

The last Monday night game of the season pits two (probable) playoff teams against each other at the Superdome, where the Saints absolutely own. The Falcons better hope they can clinch a playoff berth next week, because they’re in over their heads. Drew Brees needs a tad over 300 yards to break Dan Marino’s all-time yardage record, and I’m pretty sure he’ll do it. Let the offense commence!

Boom. Trap it up. New Orleans is on the road after a pretty convincing whupping of the Lions last week. Tennessee is very quietly eking their way into the AFC playoffs with all-around solid team play. New Orleans may be trying to keep pace with the Niners, but they don’t NEED this game like the Titans do. Drew Brees could have one of his famous “Throw for 345 yards, 3 TD’s and 3 INT’s” days, giving the Saints points, but not a win.

I don’t care how “talented” the Lions are, they’re still the most undisciplined team I’ve ever seen. When is “hard-liner” Jim Schwartz going to step in and punish his own players for the ridiculous and over-the-line shit they do? Brandon Pettigrew shoving a referee was beyond idiotic.

So without Ndamukong Suh (who wasn’t playing all that well this year anyway, but still needs to be blocked), how are the Lions going to get a legitimate pass rush on Drew Brees? I could easily see Drew and the gang going off in this one. Darren Sproles should abuse a soft run defense and Brees’ receivers are going to viciously exploit that Lion secondary. This is the week that will show the league who the Lions really are.

Well that fizzled. I was hoping for a little more of a fight from a Giants team on the precipice, but instead they came out flat and laid down against the Saints’ offensive machine. (1-1) Chicago Bears 13

It was clear early on that the Bears were going to have issues with the Saints’ blitzes as Cutler was knocked to the ground often. Still, the Bears got on the board first thanks to a lengthy drive that was luckily extended by two questionable penalties on the Saints, capped off with a pass to Sanzenbacher in the endzone. After that it was field goal city for the Bears, who got absolutely nothing going on offense aside from Matt Forte’s receiving yardage. It started up front, with a Lance Louis-less offensive line that got taken advantage of all game long. Gabe Carimi going down in the first half was just a sign of more hits to come. The Saints managed double-digit hits on Cutler, which doesn’t include the six sacks of the Bear QB, one of which resulted in a fumble. Cutler was obviously and understandably frustrated as the game drew on as his receivers dropped several passes and his line gave no resistance to the Saint defenders. I would have been furious too with the collection of crap that surrounded him. No one should question Cutler’s toughness after the beating he took today. He’s got idiots on the offensive line and a madcap in a booth calling plays. How mad would you be?

Okay… WHAT? Now, I will take full credit for thinking this would be a close game, but nowhere did I think the lowly Seahawks would be able to oust the defending champs, home field advantage or not. Matt Hasselbeck had a phenomenal afternoon, lighting up the Saints secondary, which was without starting safety Malcolm Jenkins. I put this loss squarely on New Orleans’ defense, which just never decided to show up. When Drew Brees and that offense drop 36 points, there’s no excuse for losing, especially to a 7-9 squad. Still, the Seahawks went out and played a great game in front of their home crowd and proved it doesn’t matter what your record is when the postseason begins. A 7-9 team beat the defending Super Bowl champs. The Seahawks belonged there. Credit Pete Carroll with getting his boys ready and believing in the aging Hasselbeck.

Okay, we’ve heard all the banter and ridicule. Yes, Seattle is a sub .500 team that won a crap division to get into the playoffs. Now that they’re here, they have a game to play. Let’s focus on that, shall we? At first glance this seems like an easy win for the Saints, hence their overwhelming odds. Still, without running backs Chris Ivory or Pierre Thomas, this game could be closer than you’d think. Drew Brees has to avoid the costly turnovers, especially on the road at Qwest Field where you can’t give the crowd a reason to get into it. The Saints have to put multiple touchdowns up early and take the fans out of the equation. To do that they have to go to the air early and often against a weak Seahawk secondary that won’t be able to keep track of Brees’ countless targets (which might include a fresh off of surgery Marques Colston). Someone will be open and Brees has to get them the ball. It’s that simple.

When the Saints needed a score, Drew Brees made sure it happened. Well, it happened after two interceptions (one of which was a pick-six), but you get the idea. Atlanta’s offense couldn’t get anything going almost all night, being shut down through the air and on the ground. Right after seeing the Bengals wipe away his lead, Brees calmly stepped out on the field and marched it right down to the red zone, where Bengal DT Pat Sims decided to give him a gift by jumping off-sides on a fourth and two play that would have never been run. Dumb plays like that are why the Bengals aren’t going to the playoffs and why Marvin Lewis should get fired.

e defense.

Nothing really to do with their success, but look at those cheerleaders!

New Orleans Saints

They were the Super Bowl champs last year. What else do you need to know? They have one of the top three quarterbacks in the league in Drew Brees and a gutsy coach in Sean Payton. Their offensive line doesn't get enough credit, which was so good last season the Saints could afford to trade tackle Jammal Brown to the 'Skins. Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush offer the offense two completely different looks out of the backfield. Wide receiver Robert Meachem took a step forward last season catching 45 passes for 722 yards and nine touchdowns. Add his progression to a wide-out corps that already features Devery Henderson, and Marques Colston and Brees won't be lacking for weapons. Oh yeah, and Brees is pretty good.

If you're reading this, it means you're not among the thralls of New Orleans Saints fans in Louisiana or with the team in Miami that are just beginning what is sure to be a month-long party because their team just won their first ever Super Bowl. On a night thought by many to be Peyton Manning's coronation, Drew Brees ended up at the post-game podium as the MVP of the night after a 31-17 victory. Sunday's championship contest didn't get off to the most exciting of starts, but it sure finished with one.

After prepping you for the game yesterday with separate previews of the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, it's time to bring the two together for my Super Bowl predictions.

As you're enjoying commercials and stuffing your face with every snack food known to man, it's hard to remember there's a game to be watched. If you miss it, you could miss one of the most explosive Super Bowl match-ups in history. Behind Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, these offenses are always threats to hit the big play. That gives defensive coordinators headaches. Each defense will look to pressure the opposing QB early and often. Whoever best achieves that goal has the best chance to take home the coveted Lombardi Trophy.

n this special edition of the Opening Drive I take a look at the NFC representative in SB XLIV, the New Orleans Saints.

Head Coach Sean Payton has taken this team from the bowels of the NFL to a legitimate contender. His offense put up a league-high 32 points a game during the regular season, making it one of the most prolific in history. But we all knew the Saints had a great offense. It was Payton's decision to bring in Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator (and give up part of his own salary to do so, as has been widely publicized) that propelled his Saints to the Super Bowl. While it wasn't dominating, Williams' pressure-filled defense created 39 takeaways during the regular season, second only to the Green Bay Packers. Who needs to stop the run when you'll simply force a turnover on the next the play? On the way to the big game, the Saints absolutely punished Kurt Warner and Brett Favre in their two victories. They want to repeat that result against Peyton Manning.

Are you ready for two weeks of hype for a Brett Favre versus Peyton Manning Super Bowl?

Well TOO FREAKING BAD! The Saints were having none of it today. And what a coincidence that in a year marred by missed field goals, it was on the leg of lesser-known Saints kicker Garrett Hartley that the Saints earned a spot in their first ever Super Bowl with a 31-28 win over the Vikings.

They'll cover.

Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints
6:40ET FOX

After blowing up the supposedly superior Dallas Cowboys last week in Minnesota, Brett Favre and the Vikings are traveling to a different dome for the NFC title game, this time in New Orleans. Hopefully for coach Brad Childress he brought Adrian Peterson and his running game along for the ride. They'll need it to keep Drew Brees and the Saints offense on the sidelines. In an opposing dome, the Viking o-line must maintain their composure and avoid costly penalties that will put Favre in obvious passing situations. Percy Harvin is expected to play after missing practices all week with migraines. Minnesota's defense can rush the passer and stop the run with the best of the NFL, but they are weak in the secondary. Getting to Brees early and often could shift the balance in their purple-flavored-favor. Will Favre reach the Super Bowl and ignite sports nation in two weeks of hype?

ardinals to kick-off the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Responding to the quick score, the New Orleans Saints proved why they were the number one seed on the NFC by scoring touchdowns on three straight possessions to give them a 21-7 lead before the end of the first quarter. Bush lowered the hammer on two early carries to set the tone early: these Saints would not be denied. A Beanie Wells score early in the second brought the Cardinals back into striking distance, but that would be the last time the Cardinals would hit the scoreboard. Their two turnovers killed drives and gave the Saints 14 points.

waste any time, here's the Opening Drive for Divisional Saturday in the NFL!

Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints
4:30PM ET FOX

After last Sunday night's shoot-out in the desert, the Cardinals head to the Superdome, ready to repeat last year's post-season success. Quarterback Kurt Warner has a knack for playing his best football in the playoffs and last week was no exception. He is expected to be without receiver Anquan Boldin for the second straight week, but that will be a game-time decision. He'll still have Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston on the outside, so he'll be just fine. Arizona shocked Green Bay with their commitment to the running game last week, gaining over 150 yards on the ground. Concerns arise when discussing their defense, but as we saw in overtime last week, they can make plays when they need them. Darnell Dockett, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Adrian Wilson all have thr ability to affect the outcome.

(13-2) New Orleans Saints 17

This game was the WTF? moment of the weekend. The formerly 13-0 Saints have dropped two straight, but losing on a last second field goal to the lowly Buccaneers is inexcusable. Cadillac Williams ran all over the Saints defense, but it was the New Orleans offense struggling to put up points that lost them the game. That defense isn't good enough to keep teams under 17.

Let's start the Opening Drive of week 15 in the NFL!

(8-5) Dallas Cowboys at (13-0) New Orleans Saints

Dallas' DeMarcus Ware is going to play less than a week after suffering a neck strain, but that may not be enough for the free-falling Cowboys. Going into New Orleans and escaping with a victory will require near-flawless play and a lot of luck. Even without tight end Jeremy Shockey, Drew Brees has an abundance of weapons at his disposal. If the Saints move to 14-0, it will could signal the end of Dallas' playoff hopes and the end of Wade Philips' tenure as head coach.

I honestly see the Ravens getting this win.

New England Patriots (7-3) at New Orleans Saints (10-0)

If the Colts / Pats game wasn’t so tremendously awesome, this would be a candidate for game of the year. It’s too much and too soon to ask for another Patriot meltdown though. Oh well. I guess I’d settle for a blowout and four touchdowns from Drew Brees. I’m sorry, is my bias showing? Go Saints.

(7-0) New Orleans Saints 35
(4-3) Atlanta Falcons 27

Monday night’s Superdome thriller could have been a preview of an NFC divisional round playoff game. Matt Ryan uncharacteristically tossed three interceptions, which will likely never happen again. Michael Turner rushed for over 100 yards (151) in a loss, which has never happened before. Drew Brees hit eight different receivers for his 25 completions, utilizing the arsenal at his disposal. Reggie Bush had only five touches, making him an afterthought and a decoy in this Saints win. Sean Payton didn’t even need Bush to be successful. How impressive is that?

Monday Night Football will be rocking at the Superdome! The offensive juggernaut that is the Saints welcome Matt Ryan and the Falcons for an important NFC South division showdown. If Atlanta is going to make a push in this race, now is the time. They can’t afford to fall another game behind the streaking Saints. If Sean Payton’s team can make it to 7-0, they have to be the clear favorites to win the NFC. With a remaining schedule that includes Tampa twice, Carolina twice, Washington and St. Louis, they have a great shot at 12-14 wins. Look out everyone else.

(6-0) New Orleans Saints 46
(2-4) Miami Dolphins 34

Oh Miami, you were so close! It was a valiant effort, but you can’t hold Drew Brees down for long. His two rushing TD’s are proof of that. Down 21 points in the first half, the Saints fought back with 36 points in the second, including a 42-yard interception return by Darren Sharper. Tony Sparano’s Dolphins show promise for the future, but their schedule so far this season has been simply brutal.

This is almost a mirror image of Miami’s match-up with Indianapolis. The Dolphins will play ball control offense and may find success with the Wildcat, but they won’t be able to match up points with the Saints. Drew Brees is far too accurate with the football to be human.

Drew Brees hasn’t thrown a touchdown for a second straight week and the Saints are still undefeated. Why? They’ve established a running game and played excellent defense. New York Jets (3-0) at New Orleans Saints (3-0)

The match-up of the undefeateds! The Saints’ offense versus the Jets’ defense. Does it get any better? New York is riding high on the back of Rex Ryan’s immense swagger and his blitz-crazy defense. They face off against Drew Brees and the high-powered Saints, who proved last week they have a defense of their own. The Jets can’t keep up with the Saints on the scoreboard, so their defense will need to keep it close. If the Saints get above 24 points, you can almost lock in a win.

It wasn’t a complete blowout by halftime, but this could have been the most impressive Saints win so far. Their defense came up with four sacks and two turnovers and gave up only seven points. The offense rushed for 222 yards and didn’t need Drew Brees to throw a touchdown. Now that’s impressive.

Now we’ll see if Drew Brees can rack up the same stats against a good defense as he did versus the Lions. Philly’s D is hard-hitting and aggressive, but their blitzes could leave openings for the big play.  As football fans across the globe cast their longing eyes in the direction of the April draft, I decided that now might be a good time to reflect on draft classes of the last 10 years. Too often in this business, we rush ahead to the next big event without taking pause to evaluate the past and learn from it. In a way, this study will still be a celebration of the coming 2009 draft as I believe it will shed some light on certain overlooked trends that no one ever stops to consider. I will begin with a class by class showdown of sorts at the quarterback position over the last 10 drafts.  This is part II in the series:

In the midst of a fight for their playoff lives, the Bears and Saints can ill afford another loss on their records. One team is going to walk off the field wondering what went wrong this season while the other will keep fighting to extend theirs. If the Bears expect to defeat the top-ranked aerial assault that is Drew Bress and the Saints, Lovie Smith’s defensive expertise must be in full effect.

Let’s get to the best of week 14 in the latest edition of the Final Drive.

New Orleans Saints 29, Atlanta Falcons 25

The Saints aren’t exiting the NFC South playoff hunt without a fight. Matt Ryan of the Falcons may have been the better quarterback on the field, but Drew Brees had a better running game backing him up. New Orleans racked up 184 yards rushing thanks to 102 yards from Pierre Thomas and 80 from the now healthier Reggie Bush. Atlanta still has a shot at a wild card spot since Dallas lost, but they didn’t do themselves any favors.

Week thirteen is in the books and online in this Final Drive!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23, New Orleans Saints 20

The Bucs needed to fight off a fourth quarter rally with a late field goal and two interceptions in the final four minutes, but they managed to come out on top over Drew Brees and the Saints. Tampa’s secondary picked off the MVP candidate Brees three times in total and held the Saints to 44 rushing yards to prove their defense is still one of the best on football. Jeff Garcia had a sub-par outing, going 9 for 23 and one touchdown, but Jon Gruden’s squad found a way to win. The Saints would need to win out and get a lot of help in order to get into the playoffs, so they’ll need to start looking at ways to improve that defense… again.

Aaron Rodgers has played fairly well, but the Packer defense hasn’t backed him up.

New Orleans Saints (6-5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-3)

Losing to a division opponent this weekend would almost certainly eliminate New Orleans from playoff contention. The NFC South is a much-improved landscape, and the Saints have suffered too many injuries to keep pace. Reggie Bush is listed as questionable, but has declared his intention to be on the field. Tampa Bay has fought off the returning Panthers and the rising Falcons to hold a share of the South lead after twelve weeks. Jon Gruden has done a solid coaching job, but keeping Jeff Garcia out of the starting line-up for so long may have cost his team a win. Even if the Bucs can’t hold onto the division, they should be in a prime spot to take a wildcard slot. Expect to see them come January.

Matt Ryan is the real deal. A frontrunner for rookie of the year through nine games, Ryan out-dueled MVP candidate Drew Brees to put his Falcons at 6-3. Unfortunately that puts them tied for second place in a cutthroat NFC South. If they can’t overtake the Panthers, it is possible they could sneak in as a wildcard in the NFC. The Saints will be missing Reggie Bush for another week, even as they come off a bye. Though they managed to defeat San Diego without Bush, the longer he is out the more a playoff spot slips away from the Saints. 's Record: 3-1

*Classic NFL Films music hits*

1) San Diego Chargers @ New Orleans Saints

Saints are slated to be the home team in this one as the NFL heads overseas to play at London's Wembley Stadium for a second consecutive season. Giants and the Dolphins played last season in a soggy-rainy affair at 'legendary' Wembley. I remember going into that game a lot of people were like wow "Giants-Dolphins" is what we brought overseas?! Turns out...we brought the Superbowl Champions over there. Just shows any team can take the prize at the end of the tunnel. Especially this season with the NFL being more unpredictable and 'topsy curvy'. This game features two disappointments so far this season. Things however are looking worse for the Saints as lead running back Reggie Bush suffered cartilage damage in his knee against the Panthers last week. The Saints have also lost all 3 away from the Superdome. For some reason...my gut is thinking the Saints, but I'm going to pick safe here and go with the healthier team and pick San Diego.

San Diego Chargers (3-4) at New Orleans Saints (3-4)

San Diego was man-handled by the Bills last week, so they’re due for an exciting win. The problem is, so are the Saints. These are two of the most unpredictable teams in the league, and both are coming off bad losses. The Chargers aren’t making up any ground on the faltering Broncos, and sooner than later the frustration will take its toll on them. L.T.’s toe injury just hasn’t gone away, and it’s causing their running game to suffer tremendously. Philip Rivers leads the league in touchdowns at 16 and passer rating at 108.5, but his spectacular season is overshadowed by the Chargers’ incongruity.  San Diego won’t be able to keep trading off wins and losses, so getting back to .500 is monumental going into the second half of the year.

Carolina Panthers 30, New Orleans Saints 7

This was another game that was supposed to be highly competitive between two teams fighting for NFC South supremacy. Instead, we have another blow-out, and New Orleans has another injury to one of its stars. This time it’s the electrifying Reggie Bush, who left with a knee injury in the first half. He had surgery on Monday, and he’s expected to miss around 4 weeks. Tight end Jeremy Shockey may have re-injured his groin after returning to action after having sports hernia surgery about a month ago. Bush is the more serious injury, as he’s not only the Saints’ premiere running back, but he is among the league leaders in receptions, and he is the Saints’ primary kick returner. These facets of Reggie’s game have helped him to lead the league in touchdowns with eight (tied with the Titan’s Lendale White). If he’s out for an extended period of time, the Saints could be in trouble of falling completely out of the NFC South picture. In the stats, this looked like an even game, aside from the Saint’s two turnovers. It was anything but, as the Panthers asserted themselves.

New Orleans Saints (3-3) at Carolina Panthers (4-2)

I love these NFC South divisional contests. Its only week seven, but the playoffs are already on the line for New Orleans, who embarrassed Oakland last Sunday. Drew Brees is far and away the MVP so far, and he’s done it without three top threats in receiver Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey, and David Patten. There could be an explosion in Carolina, as all three are expected to return to action. Reggie Bush has carried this team in their absence by way of his running, pass receptions, and kick and punt returns. Their presence will allow him more opportunities for big plays while taking the pressure of his shoulders.

While watching my Vikings play the Saints the other night, I was treated to one of the most hilarious moments I have ever had while watching an NFL game.  I don't exactly remember when in the game this was, but at some point a defensive lineman from one team jumped into the neutral zone and made the offensive lineman from the other team move.  The penalty should clearly be for offensive false start (as a defensive player is only penalized if he touches an opposing offensive player before the snap), and that is exactly what happened.  However, it was the way in which the much-maligned Ed Hochuli made the call that was so hilarious to me.  A few years ago, the NFL began cracking down on their officiating crew, most notably to get them to thoroughly explain each call made on the field.  Thus, Hochuli's statement about the false start penalty: "A defensive player jumped into the neutral zone before the snap, but that does not excuse the offensive player from false-starting, resulting in a 10-yard penalty".  I love it!!  Perhaps it was just the lateness of the hour or my lack of sleep at the time, but I found the in-depth description of that play to be absolutely hilarious!

The Crying Game

The Terrell Owens story

Hello NFL fans,

Well here we are, week four of the third year with his last team. This will be his last team, I truly believe that. If I were an owner I would rather get a letter full of anthrax and then imprisoned IN Cuba to spend the rest of my days.
